Listen to the Latest Episode of our Podcast - Staying Positive through Injuries with Susie

In this episode Elspeth, your host and today I will be joined by Susie. Susis has been coached at Girls Get Strong Cycling by Elspeth for over 3 years. It’s been a journey. Susie first appeared on a podcast talking about her 1st year of racing in the UK. Since then it’s certainly not been all plain sailing as last year Susie had 2 serious accidents that meant a lot of time off the bike and in rehab. It’s great Susie is now back cycling and she will share with us how her positive attitude kept her training and seeing the light at the end of the tunnel through this difficult time. So this is a story of her determination to keep going and keep believing in yourself no matter what live throws at you.

Firstly Susie talks about what a great year she was having before she had her first accident. She completed the Mallorca 312, full distance, got a 50min PB in the Maratona and also qualified for the grandfondo world championships in her age category. It's even more impressive when we consider Susie is 59 years old.

Just over a year ago Susie had an accident on the bike where she broke her vertebrae. This meant that she missed out on the grandfondo world championships that was taking place in Scotland. Susie shares what kept her positive was that she had a goal to train for which was to take part in some UK hill climb competitions in which were happening in October. Susie did the training that she could and worked with me so we could understand her limitations and what she could do, so once healed Susie did a great performance on the hill climbs and loved being back on the bike again.

Unfortunately shortly after the hill climbs Susie had a fall on her bike which left her with many broken bones and back to rehab. Susie shares how she kept to her routine, did the training she could and religiously followed the exercises given to her by her physio, whilst always focusing on the light at the end of the tunnel.

It's great to know now Susie is back cycling again and building up the strength in which she previously had. Although it was very boring and limiting to what Susie could do, just doing the training she could paid a huge part in a strong comeback.

I hope for anyone out there listening with in injury,  this episode will help you see the light at the end of the tunnel and the energy to keep positive through difficult times.
