With the cycling season coming to an end for most of us, it's a good time to starting thinking about goals for the year ahead! Here's just a few reasons why it's great to set goals ahead of time:
It can keep us motivated, training over the winter can be tough, but when we know there is something that excites us to work towards we feel more emotionally invested in the challenge.
The more time we have to prepare the better. Some might argue that what happens over winter can be the most important preparation for our season ahead.
If something does get in the way, we have time to readjust for the best possible chance for getting to the day feeling strong and feeling prepared.
At GGSC we successfully coach women to achieve many different goals. Here are just a few examples that maybe you can relate to:
Doing an epic event, this could be taking part in a huge gran fondo, such as Mallorca 312, the Maratona, L'Etap, IM or IM 70.3. These events often sell out well in advance. So you do need to plan ahead to get your spot. These events can be an amazing experience to travel to and be part of. Also, for a lot of the professional classic races such as Strade Bianche, Amstel Gold there is an opportunity to take part in an event before the professionals and then you have the chance to watch the race once you have finished.
As well as these epic events I'm sure there will be lots of events that are local to you which often have a great sense of camaraderie, we coach many women doing events for the first time, or they want to do the event again, but just improve their time with the support of a coach.
One of the amazing things about cycling is that we can combine it with a love of travel and visiting new place. This can bring on new challenges on unknown roads, longer days in the saddle, multiple days of cycling and more climbing than we are used to. We coach many women to preparation to attending our cycling camps in Mallorca and also for visiting many other great cycling destinations around the world.
I think all the women we coach want to get faster and many also want to ride longer, in events such as audaxing and also ultras. Being more efficient by being a faster cyclist over longer distances is going to make the events easier.
What is great about cycling is that there are always new disciplines to try, that are going to develop your skills and challenge you physically. For example gravel events are growing in popularity, triathlons are accessible from sprint distance. There is always something new out there for you to explore. We have coaches that specialise in triathlon and also off road in addition to road events.
There's no right or wrong goals to set as a cyclist, just as long and you continue enjoying your time on the bike.
