Why Cycling is Good for your Mental Health

Cycling is a great form of exercise where you can easily improve your level of fitness. Just knowing that we are practicing in activities that improves our physical health can give a boost to our mental health also.

So how can the physical benefits make us feel better mentally?

Cycling helps improve your cardiovascular system. The act of cycling stimulates your heart, lungs and circulation. It will strengthen your heart muscles and reduce your risk of

cardiovascular disease. Your resting heart rate will decrease and reduces blood fat levels.

There’s the science, so how is that going to make you feel?

  • You will find that you will not get out of breath as easily. You will sleep better and can feel more relaxed due to a lower resting heart rate.

  • Do you notice that when you come in for a ride you always feel better? Well that’s probably the endorphins that are released during exercise. They are hormones that make you feel happy.

  • How many times have you sat at home feeling guilty that you did not get out on your bike? Getting out and doing exercise is going to make you feel positive, because you are doing something positive for your health.

  • Cycling can give you a great sense of achievement. You can set yourself goals and work towards entering events or just see the improvements you made. This will be a huge boost in confidence.

  • Being outdoors with nature will help you reduce anger, fear and stress and increase your pleasant feelings.

  • Cycling can give you time for yourself on your bike. It can be a form of meditation and inhibit your flow state where you can immerse yourself in the activity of cycling and exploring where you mind is.
