Why Do We Like to Suffer?

Updated: Aug 19, 2021

Do you find that you want to push yourself in cycling and all areas of your life?

Do you want to experience the capacity to suffer through cycling?

Why is this that we actively seek out to inflict suffering onto ourselves? I will hope to explain and it also might help explain the reason we love cycling so much.

  • Suffering can lead to profound happiness. The feeling of suffering is a feeling of consciousness. So sometimes we will seek pain in order to also feel the happiness inside of ourselves.

“Because human consciousness must involve both pleasure and pain, to strive for pleasure to the exclusion of pain is, in effect, to strive for loss of consciousness”

Alan Watts

  • We know that if we suffer we will come out stronger at the end of it. We can build physical and mental reliance from experiencing pain, thus giving us more confidence that we can go out and do it again.

  • We can use it as an outlet to challenge ourselves. Part of the allure is finding out what the body can do. We can explore further possibilities of what we are capable of.

  • Through pushing ourselves in cycling we release happy chemicals like serotonin and dopamine, which cause euphoria and pain relief, are being released into your bloodstream. Serotonin is the mood neurotransmitter responsible for positive feelings and self-confidence. Dopamine helps us to feel fresh and motivated.
